In what contexts does the Bible most often speak about joy?

In the Bible, joy often appears in connection with God's presence, salvation, worship, and hope. Some passages link joy to evident blessing, while others call believers to rejoice in the Lord even while hardship continues.

Are joy and happiness the same thing?

The Bible does not always make this distinction in a technical way, so a rigid definition would be overstated. Still, many passages suggest that joy can endure beyond circumstances; for example, Philippians 4:4 frames joy as rooted in one's relationship with the Lord.
