The story of Philemon in the Bible
Philemon is the recipient of one of the shortest letters in the New Testament, and almost everything we know about him comes from those few lines. Paul addresses him as a beloved fellow worker, extending greetings also to Apphia, Archippus, and the church that met in Philemon's house; his home was clearly a gathering place for believers. Paul remembers him in prayer, giving thanks for his faith and his love for the saints, and writes that the hearts of God's people have been refreshed through him. The heart of the letter is a request: sending back Onesimus, who had come to faith during Paul's imprisonment, the apostle chooses loving appeal over command. He asks Philemon to receive the man who had been his slave as something more, a beloved brother, welcomed as Paul himself would be, and offers to cover any debt personally. Confident that Philemon will do even more than he asks, Paul closes with a personal hope: that through the prayers of the church he may be released and visit, so a guest room should be made ready.
