Description

An Armenian Catholic church located in Kadıköy.

History

Surp Levon Armenian Catholic Church is an Armenian Catholic church in the Osmanağa neighbourhood of Kadıköy, near Altıyol (the Bull statue). The church's name comes from Pope Leo I, who served between 440 and 461 (Surp Levon in Armenian). According to sources, the building was first raised in 1890 as a wooden chapel; when this proved insufficient for the community, a decree dated 14 May 1905 authorised demolishing the chapel and building a church in its place. After the chapel was pulled down, the foundation of the church was laid in 1908 in a ceremony attended by Chief Priest Andon İskenderyan and about a hundred people, and the stone church was completed and opened for worship in 1911. Surp Levon is described in the sources as the last church built in Turkey by an imperial decree (firman).
