Description

A French Catholic church in Moda, Kadıköy (Notre-Dame de l'Assomption), built in 1865. Masses are held in French and Turkish.

History

The Kadıköy French Catholic Church (Notre-Dame de l'Assomption) is a Catholic church on Cem Street in Moda, often described as the largest church in the Kadıköy district. According to sources, the need for a Catholic church arose in the 19th century as Italian and French families settled in Moda, a neighbourhood then home mainly to Greek and Armenian families. The building is reported to have been constructed in 1865 by the Italian architect Giovanni Barberini, with contributions from the Lorando family of Kadıköy Moda. The church's name comes from the Assumptionist congregation, which took over the ministry here in 1895 by decision of Pope Leo XIII. Rising within a courtyard, one of the building's most striking features is the bell tower on its western front. Masses are held in Turkish and French.
