Description

A Greek Orthodox church on Karakolhane Street in Rasimpaşa, Kadıköy.

History

The Ayios Yeorgios (Saint George) Greek Orthodox Church stands on Karakolhane Avenue in the Rasimpaşa neighbourhood of Kadıköy and takes its name from Saint George, widely venerated in the Orthodox tradition. Sources give differing accounts of the building's history: by one account the building served as a school until 1919 and was demolished and rebuilt as a church in 1927; another record states that in 1881 the school building was also used as a church, and that after a new school was built alongside it the older structure functioned as a church until 1927. The roughly 15-metre bell tower, rising on iron supports, is recorded as having been cast by the noted bell master Zilciyan Usta of Samatya. The church's icons are said to be reproductions, painted on wood, of the mosaics at the Chora (Kariye).
