Description

A Greek Orthodox church located in Kadıköy.

History

The Aya Efimia (Hagia Euphemia) Greek Orthodox Church stands near Kadıköy's main square and owes its name to Saint Euphemia of Chalcedon (Kadıköy). According to sources, Saint Euphemia was the daughter of a wealthy Kadıköy family and was put to death for her faith in the year 303; at the Ecumenical Council held in Kadıköy in 451 she came to be venerated as one of the patron saints of the Orthodox world. The present church is recorded as standing on a different site from the ancient church of Hagia Euphemia. Sources state that the current church was rebuilt in 1694 by Gabriel, Metropolitan of Kadıköy, enlarged in 1830 under Metropolitan Zacharias II, and — after falling into disrepair over time — comprehensively renovated and reopened for worship in 1993. The building follows an inscribed Greek-cross plan, crowned at the centre by a dome on a high drum.
