Jonah and the Big Fish
Jonah tries to run away from God, but a big fish keeps him safe. God gives him a second chance.
Jonah Tries to Run Away
There was a man named Jonah. One day God told him to go to a big city called Nineveh and to bring the people there a message, asking them to be kind. But Jonah did not want to go. Nineveh was very far away, and Jonah did not feel like going there at all; perhaps he was a little afraid, or perhaps he was just being lazy. In his heart he thought, “I wish this task had not been given to me.” Yet God was not calling him to be angry with him, but so that he could bring kindness to the people who lived there. Sometimes the right thing we must do feels hard to us; we want to put it off, or even run away. That is exactly how Jonah felt. But he had forgotten one thing: God's love leaves us no place to run to; wherever we go, He always loves us and looks for us. “I will not go there,” he said, and he ran the opposite way, toward a harbor.
The Storm and an Honest Choice
At the harbor he found a ship and climbed aboard. “This way God will not find me,” he thought. But God's love is everywhere; it was impossible to run away from Him. When the ship sailed out to sea, a great storm arose. The wind howled, and the waves tossed the ship left and right. The sailors were very frightened.
Jonah understood that the storm had come because of him, and he was honest. “Put me into the sea, then the water will grow calm,” he said. The sailors let him down into the water very unwillingly, and the storm stopped at once.
Inside the Big Fish
As Jonah sank into the water, God sent a very big fish. The fish swallowed Jonah gently and kept him safe inside. Jonah stayed in the fish for three days. There, in the dark, he thought and prayed with all his heart: “God, forgive me. From now on I will do what You ask.”
A Second Chance
God heard Jonah's prayer. The fish gently placed Jonah on the shore, and Jonah breathed on the dry sand. This time he set out for Nineveh without waiting a moment. When he reached the city, he gave the people God's message. And something wonderful happened: the people listened to him and decided to become kinder.
Jonah's story teaches us this: we all make a wrong choice sometimes, or want to put off what we should do. But God still loves us and gives us a second chance. It is never too late to make something right again.
Talk about the story
Jonah ran away first, then changed his mind. When did you want to make something right again?
