Moses and the Sea That Opened

As Moses leads his people to freedom, a great sea blocks the way. God opens a path right through the water.

The Journey to Freedom

Moses was a leader chosen by God. For many long years the people of Israel had worked at very hard tasks in Egypt, waiting to be free. At last, through Moses, God brought His people out of Egypt. Everyone set out with joy: mothers, fathers, children, sheep and goats… all of them walking toward a new homeland. The journey lasted for many days. By day the sun was hot and by night the desert was cool; but the people were hopeful, because now they were free. As they walked the children sang songs, and the grown-ups helped one another. Moses walked at the front, giving everyone courage, saying, “If God has brought us this far, He will bring us all the way.” Sometimes when they were tired they complained, and sometimes they were afraid; but each time God gave them what they needed. This long journey was teaching them to trust and to stay together.

The Sea Blocks the Way

But the journey was not easy. One day a huge sea appeared in front of them. The water was so wide that the far shore could not even be seen. Just then a cloud of dust rose behind them: the Egyptian army was coming after them, wanting them to turn back. The people were trapped in the middle — the sea in front, the army behind. They began to cry out in fear.

Moses spoke to the people in a calm voice: “Do not be afraid. Stand still and see what God will do. He is with us.”

The Waters Split in Two

Then God told Moses to stretch his staff out over the sea. Moses raised his arm, and something amazing happened: a wind blew, and the waters split in two! A long, dry path opened right through the middle of the sea. The water rose up like a wall on the right and the left, but the ground the people walked on was not even muddy.

The people of Israel began to walk along this path. The children looked left and right, watching the walls of water in wonder. Step by step, all together, they crossed to the other shore. When everyone reached dry land safely, there was great joy.

Safe on the Other Shore

Once the people were safe, the waters slowly returned to their place, and the sea behind them came together again. The people of Israel were now free. That day they all sang thankful songs together, danced, and thanked God.

Sometimes there can be very big obstacles in front of us — just like that huge sea. We may not know what to do. But the story of Moses reminds us: God can open a way for us even where we least expect it. Standing calm and trusting Him is one of the most beautiful kinds of courage.

Talk about the story

The people were very afraid at the sea. Do you think they believed God would open a way? What would you have thought?
