"Zabur" (Zebur in Turkish) is another well-known name for the book of Psalms in the Bible. The word is bound up with the Hebrew tradition of poetry and praise; the book's Hebrew name is "Tehillim" (praises) and its Greek name is "Psalmoi" (psalms). In Turkish, "Zebur" and "Mezmurlar" largely refer to the same book.
The Psalms are made up of 150 separate poems. These poems give voice to a wide range of moods — prayer, praise, thanksgiving, supplication, lament and wisdom. Some are written in joy and gratitude, others out of deep distress and a cry for help; this variety has made the Psalms one of the most read and most prayed parts of Scripture for centuries.
Most of the Psalms are traditionally attributed to King David, though the book bears the mark of other writers too. Within the Bible the Zabur belongs among the poetry and wisdom writings of the Old Testament — the same section as books like Job and Proverbs.
The name "Zabur" is also known in the Islamic tradition as a book given to David; in the Bible, the Zabur corresponds to the book of Psalms.
