Mount Nebo rises northeast of the Dead Sea on the western edge of the Moabite plateau; the Bible places it in the Abarim range, opposite Jericho. God told Moses to climb this mountain and view the land of Canaan that he would give to Israel. From the top of Pisgah Moses saw the land from Gilead as far as Dan, but he did not cross the Jordan; he died there, in the land of Moab. The Bible adds that no one knows the place of his grave to this day.

Where is Mount Nebo, and in which country?

Mount Nebo today is in Jordan, about 9 kilometres northwest of the city of Madaba. According to the Bible, Moses climbed it before his death and the LORD showed him the promised land (Deuteronomy 34:1). On the summit visitors see the Memorial of Moses church, built over the remains of a Byzantine church, with its rich floor mosaics. On a clear day the Dead Sea, the Jordan valley, Jericho and distant Jerusalem can be seen from here.

Is Moses' tomb on Mount Nebo?

The Bible says Moses was buried in a valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor, but that no one knows the place of his grave to this day (Deuteronomy 34:6). The Memorial of Moses church on Mount Nebo is not a tomb but a place commemorating the moment he viewed the land. In Muslim tradition, the shrine of Nabi Musa near Jericho is visited as his resting place.
