What Is Grace?

Grace is the Bible's core term for God's unearned, freely given kindness toward people. In the Old Testament it is intertwined with God's favor and steadfast love for his people; in the New Testament, especially in Paul's letters, it stands at the center of the teaching on salvation. Salvation is presented not as a reward earned by human effort or achievement but as a gift God offers through Christ, and faith is the way this gift is received. Grace is also described as the power that carries a believer's daily life: God's support that is sufficient in weakness, equips for service and enables growth. The word appears frequently in the greetings and closing lines of the New Testament letters, showing how central it was to the life of the early church. In short, grace names the goodness that flows from God's character and is received without being deserved.
