Zacchaeus is the tax collector in Luke 19 who is known for his encounter with Jesus. The text introduces him as a chief tax collector and a wealthy man. In first-century Jewish society, tax collectors were often seen as collaborators with the Roman system and were therefore regarded with moral suspicion. For that reason the story of Zacchaeus is not only a tale of personal curiosity; it is also the story of the transformation of someone socially excluded.
Because Zacchaeus is short, he cannot see Jesus through the crowd, so he climbs a tree. This small detail makes the story vivid, but the main emphasis lies in Jesus noticing him. Jesus says that he must stay at Zacchaeus' house. The people around them criticize Jesus for entering the home of a man regarded as a sinner. In response, Zacchaeus says that he will give half of his goods to the poor and that if he has defrauded anyone, he will repay it several times over. The striking point here is that the change does not remain only an inward feeling; it produces economic and social consequences.
Jesus' statement that salvation has come to this house is the theological center of the story. In the next sentence, the Son of Man says that he came to seek and to save the lost. This turns the narrative into more than a lesson in private morality; it becomes a scene that summarizes Jesus' mission. Christian traditions usually read Zacchaeus as an example of repentance, welcome, and concrete restitution. In Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant interpretation, the main emphasis is similar: grace produces visible fruit in a person's life. Debate arises more over doctrinal details such as the order of salvation or the place of good works. Even so, the common conclusion is clear: Zacchaeus is the person not rejected by Jesus, and his life changes direction through that encounter.
