The Sabbath is the weekly day in Scripture that gathers together the themes of rest, holiness, and trust in God. In the Old Testament command given to Israel, the seventh day is set apart from ordinary work and linked both to God's pattern in creation and to Israel's deliverance from Egypt. For that reason, the Sabbath is not only physical rest; it is also a way of admitting that human beings are not the center of the world and that life itself is a gift from God.

The Sabbath command also has a social dimension. Not only the head of the household, but children, servants, foreigners, and even animals are meant to rest. In that sense, Sabbath sets a merciful limit against the pressure of endless productivity. A person does not secure identity through constant work; he or she stands before God as someone created and sustained by him. Sabbath offers a rhythm in which worship and justice are not separated.

In Jesus' ministry, the Sabbath often becomes a point of controversy. Jesus does not speak in order to abolish the Sabbath, but to reveal its true purpose. Doing good, healing the sick, and showing mercy are not violations of Sabbath; they are deeply consistent with it. In the New Testament era, Christians have developed different views about how the Sabbath command should be practiced. Some traditions treat Sunday as a kind of Christian Sabbath. Others argue that the deepest Sabbath rest is fulfilled in Christ, so the obligation to a specific day does not continue in exactly the same way. This is a debated matter among Christians, and there is no complete uniformity.

Even so, the wider principle is clear: God did not create people to be consumed by ceaseless labor. Rest, worship, and trust belong to faithful living.

In short, the Sabbath is God's holy ordering of life that calls people to rest, worship, and trust by remembering that he is the Creator and Deliverer.
