In the Bible, prophecy is the communication of God's word to people. At times this includes statements about the future, but it would be incomplete to define prophecy only as predicting events. The prophets often call God's people to repentance, expose injustice, confront idolatry, offer hope, and explain God's purpose. In other words, prophecy brings God's perspective into a particular moment of history.

In the Old Testament, prophets carry the responsibility of speaking in God's name, and their words are taken with great seriousness. False prophecy is also a major warning. For that reason, prophecy is not only dramatic; it is weighty and accountable. In the New Testament, prophecy is linked to the building up of the church, aiming at encouragement, consolation, and spiritual benefit. Yet believers are also specifically told to test what is spoken.

Christians do not all think the same way about the nature of prophecy today. Many traditions agree that the canonical revelation of Scripture is complete and that no new word can be added as an authority equal to it. The main difference appears elsewhere: does the Holy Spirit still give prophetic words that guide, encourage, and warn the church? Some say yes, but insist those words must be tested by Scripture. Others believe certain forms of New Testament prophetic gifting belonged especially to the apostolic era. So the matter is debated.

The safest shared ground is this: true prophecy will accord with God's character, the gospel of Christ, and the witness of Scripture; it does not put the speaker at the center, but calls people toward obedience to God.

In short, prophecy is the ministry of communicating God's word to people. It is broader than foretelling the future; it includes truth, warning, comfort, and direction.
