Scripture sees honesty not merely as giving correct information, but as having integrity between the inner and outer person. Lying is not only speaking a false sentence; it is distorting reality, damaging trust, and abusing relationship. For that reason, honesty stands near the center of moral life. When a person wounds truth with speech, he has not merely broken a rule; he has harmed his neighbor, the community, and the responsibility he bears before God.

In the Old Testament, false witness is explicitly forbidden, and truth is closely linked with justice. The same principle continues in the New Testament. Paul says that believers must put off the old self and speak truth with one another. The reason is that the community is made of members who belong to each other. Lies act like a force that decays that bond from within. At the same time, Scripture does not confuse honesty with harshness. Truth must be spoken in love; otherwise a person may use even what is correct in a destructive way.

Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant traditions all regard honesty as a basic virtue. There are discussions about difficult cases, such as how truth should be spoken in extreme situations, questions of confidentiality, privacy, or preserving life; some details are therefore not entirely settled or are interpreted differently. Even so, there is strong agreement that deliberate deception and lying are morally serious matters.

In daily life, honesty appears not only in major crises but in small habits: not exaggerating, not misleading by omission, admitting fault, and not exploiting trust for advantage. In Christianity, truthfulness is not dry severity but reliability. When a person stands behind his or her word, relationships become safer. Scripture's direction is clear: love the truth, but carry it with love and responsibility.
