The story of Jehu in the Bible
Jehu rose to kingship in the northern kingdom of Israel. The prophet Elisha sent one of the company of prophets to Ramoth-Gilead, where the young man took Jehu, an army commander, into an inner room, poured oil on his head and declared that the LORD had anointed him king over Israel and that Ahab's house would be judged. Hearing this, the officers blew the trumpet and proclaimed him king. Jehu conspired against King Joram, who was recovering from his wounds at Jezreel, drove there swiftly, struck him down and had his body thrown into Naboth's field; Ahaziah king of Judah was fatally wounded in the same uprising, and Jezebel was thrown from her window. Jehu then wiped out Ahab's house, gathered the worshipers of Baal and destroyed them, demolishing Baal's temple and erasing Baal from Israel. The LORD promised that his sons would sit on Israel's throne to the fourth generation because he had done well against Ahab's house. Yet he did not turn from the sins of Jeroboam's golden calves, and he reigned twenty-eight years in Samaria.
