The story of Uzziah in the Bible
Uzziah was one of the longest-reigning kings of Judah, also called Azariah. He came to the throne young and reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. Second Chronicles describes his era: he did what was right in the LORD's eyes and prospered as long as he sought God; he fought the Philistines, built towers and cisterns, loved the soil, organized a strong army, and his fame spread far. But when he grew powerful, his heart became proud: he entered the temple to burn incense on the incense altar. The priest Azariah and eighty courageous priests confronted him, saying that this duty belonged only to the priests descended from Aaron. As Uzziah raged, a skin disease broke out on his forehead; the priests hurried him out, and he himself rushed away. He lived with the disease in a separate house until his death, while his son Jotham governed the palace and the people of the land. The book of Isaiah dates the prophet's great call vision to the year King Uzziah died, so his name also marks the close of an era.
