The name Eve is of Hebrew origin.
Who is Eve in the Bible?
Eve is the first woman in the Genesis narrative, created as a companion corresponding to Adam. It is she who speaks with the serpent in the account of the forbidden fruit; even so, her name is spoken with the word of life, not of punishment.
The story of Eve in the Bible
Eve enters the Genesis account as the answer to Adam's solitude: God sees that it is not good for the man to be alone and resolves to make a helper suited to him. The animals are brought before Adam first, but none proves a fitting companion. So Adam falls into a deep sleep, and from a rib taken out of him the woman is made. Waking, Adam greets her with joy as bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh; she is called woman because she was taken out of man. In the story of the forbidden fruit she is the one who speaks with the serpent and tastes it first, standing at the center of the garden's great rupture. Yet her name recalls life rather than that rupture: Adam names his wife Eve because she would become the mother of all the living. Linked to the Hebrew root for life, the name carries a hope that outlasts the story's saddest scene — humanity will multiply through her, and life will go on.
Is Eve mentioned in the Quran?
The name Eve (Havva) does not appear as such in the text of the Quran, where she is referred to as Adam's spouse; Islamic tradition knows her by this name. In the Bible, the book of Genesis explains the name directly: she is called Eve because she is the mother of all the living.
