Who is Hananiah in the Bible?
The best-known Hananiah is one of the Judean youths taken into exile in Babylon in the book of Daniel; in the Babylonian court he is given the name Shadrach. He is especially remembered as one of the three faithful young men thrown into the fiery furnace in Daniel 1 and 3. Scripture also mentions other people with the same name.
The story of Hananiah in the Bible
We know Hananiah best from the book of Daniel. He is named among the noble young men of Judah carried off to Babylon alongside Daniel, Mishael, and Azariah. Chosen for training in the royal court, the youths received new names; Hananiah became Shadrach. His name changed, but his loyalty did not: he joined the resolve not to be defiled by the king's food, accepted the test of a simple diet, and with his friends was found far wiser than the realm's sages. When the king's demand to reveal his dream threatened the wise men's lives, he prayed with his companions to the God of heaven, and the mystery was revealed to Daniel. The most famous scene is the golden statue on the plain of Dura: Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah refused to worship it, were thrown into the blazing furnace, and were kept unharmed in the fire, moving the king to praise their God. Others in Scripture bear the name Hananiah, but it belongs first to this exile who never compromised his faithfulness.

The name Hananiah does not appear in the Quran; his story is told in the book of Daniel in the Old Testament, where he is one of the three faithful young men preserved in the fiery furnace.
