Who is Abigail in the Bible?
Abigail is presented in 1 Samuel as the wife of Nabal and later as one of David's wives, notable for wisdom and tact. In a moment of crisis she helps prevent bloodshed and emerges in the narrative as a prudent figure. Another Abigail is mentioned in 2 Samuel, but the best known is the woman who marries David.
The story of Abigail in the Bible
Abigail's story is told in 1 Samuel 25. She was the wife of Nabal, a wealthy but harsh man, and the text presents her as both beautiful and remarkably sensible. When David, whose men had protected Nabal's flocks in the wilderness, asked him for provisions, Nabal answered with insults. As David armed himself in anger and set out, Abigail acted: she prepared generous supplies, met David on the road, and with wise words persuaded him not to shed blood. In 1 Samuel 25:32 David thanks God for sending her and praises her good judgment for holding him back from that guilt. Nabal died soon afterward, and David took Abigail as his wife. From then on she appears at David's side; according to 2 Samuel 2:2 she went with him to Hebron, where he was made king. Another woman of the same name is mentioned in Scripture, but the Abigail remembered for her wisdom is the one whose calm courage averted disaster and who married David.
Is Abigail mentioned in the Quran?
The name Abigail does not appear in the Quran; in the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel she is the wise woman who prevented bloodshed and later became David's wife.
