John 13:34

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, just like I have loved you; that you also love one another.

35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

On John 13:34: the context of the command "love one another," its place on the night of Jesus' farewell and why it is called a new command.

John 13:34 falls within the words Jesus speaks on his last night with the disciples. He has just washed their feet in an unexpected act of humility; the command comes right after this gesture.

The saying sets love not as a feeling but as a measure: "just like I have loved you." This addition lifts the command out of a vague goodwill and ties it to a concrete example — and that is what makes it "new."

You can move to the chapter below to see how the command reads together with the whole farewell. The related collection on love bridges to other verses on the same theme.
