On Isaiah 9:6: the context of the promise "to us a child is born," its place in a chapter moving from darkness to light and why it is read at Christmas.
Isaiah 9:6 comes suddenly, like a light, after a chapter that speaks of darkness and despair. The prophet lists great titles around a child to be born and voices a promise of peace.
The verse ties a hope for the future to the concrete image of a birth. In this way it reads like good news spoken in the middle of a long waiting; this is why it is so often cited at Christmas.
You can move to the chapter below to see how the promise reads together with the surrounding line, "The people who walked in darkness." Related collections on Jesus and hope bridge to other verses on the same theme.
