On Romans 8:28: the context of the words that "all things work together for good," their place in a chapter on suffering and hope, and why they are so cited.
Romans 8:28 is often quoted on its own; yet it comes out of a dense chapter Paul writes about suffering and hope. Right around it there is talk of hardships endured and of a waiting.
The verse does not say that evil is good, but that all things "work together" toward a purpose. This fine distinction turns it from a comfort that belittles pain into a long-term assurance.
