19 Go,and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

On Matthew 28:19: the context of the command to "make disciples of all nations," its place at the close of the Gospel and why it is seen as a commissioning.

Matthew 28:19 comes in the final scene of Matthew's Gospel as a commissioning that gathers up the whole book. With the word "go," the story turns not to a close but to a beginning.

The saying draws for the disciples a horizon not limited to themselves: "all nations." This breadth makes the verse one of the most cited lines on the theme of witness and sharing.

You can move to the chapter below to see how the commission is completed by the promise that follows, "I am with you always." The related collection on witness bridges to other verses on the same theme.
