An Armenian Apostolic church in the Osmanağa area of central Kadıköy.

History

Surp Takavor Armenian Church is an Armenian Apostolic church in the Osmanağa neighbourhood of Kadıköy. According to sources, the church on this site is first recorded in 1722 under the name "Surp Asdvadzadzin." During the tenure of Patriarch Abraham I it was rebuilt through the charity of Harutyun Amira Noradungyan and opened in 1814, then repaired after the 1840 earthquake. Reduced to ashes in a great fire in 1855, the church was rebuilt in brick during the tenure of Patriarch Hagop III with the support of Hacı Garabed Ağa Muradyan of Erzurum and opened in 1858; it has been known as Surp Takavor ("Holy King") ever since. In the same year the Hamazasbyan and Muradyan schools were established in the church courtyard. In 1936 the inner courtyard was enlarged through the charity of Hovhannes Noradungyan; the church underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2006, and the bell tower was rebuilt in 2007.
