A Greek Orthodox church on the Kalamış-Fenerbahçe waterfront in Kadıköy, built in 1876.
History
The Ayios Ioannis Hrisostomos (Saint John Chrysostom) Greek Orthodox Church stands on the Kalamış–Fenerbahçe shore of Kadıköy, across from the old ferry landing. It takes its name from Saint John Chrysostom ("the golden-mouthed"), Archbishop of Constantinople in the 4th–5th centuries. According to sources, the building is a masonry church resting on four walls; its date of construction is not known with certainty. Inside, a barrel-vaulted ceiling rises at the centre, with a plain wooden iconostasis and numerous framed icons; the floor is covered with marble. The iron bell tower is reported to have been built in 1947. Local accounts relate that the site on which the church stands was used as a cemetery during the Byzantine period.
